One of the top five questions I get asked when helping buyers find their dream home in Loudoun is, “When will the Silver Line to Loudoun open?” The short answer is 2020, however the devil is in the details.
When the first phase of the Silver Line opened, commuters had been waiting almost six months past its promised opening date due to failed tests and other delays that had not been anticipated in the project plan. This time, though, the final phase has another proponent that was not in play in 2016 when phase one opened…Dulles Airport.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, or MWAA, is literally “chomping at the bit” for the second phase to open as the subway will make Dulles Airport accessible to downtown DC. As such, MWAA expects that this will make the airport more attractive to travelers to the area, and they are pushing the contractor’s planned completion date of 2019.
In 2019, the rail and all the stations are due to be turned over to the system and then the testing of it will begin with at least six months of operational testing before it can be opened to the public. Since the testing was the cause of the delay with the phase one opening, one should not hold their breath when it comes to the opening date of 2020.
On a positive note, the project appears to be on schedule and as of October 2017, it was 66% complete. Take a look at the pictures here and see if you agree it looks on schedule.
